Don’t Miss Your Medical News Away from Home

By the Health.mil staff

While medical providers are deployed, on vacation or away from home for an extended period, they can still stay up to date on medical news. Several military and related subject publications offer online versions of printed materials, including newsletters delivered right to a smartphone, so no need to miss a single story.

Journals such as Federal Practitioner, a peer-reviewed journal for military health care professionals, offer online subscription services that give readers access to e-mail alerts and full text articles.  The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, or AMSUS, offers an online version of its International Journal of AMSUS. AMSUS also comes in an e-mail news briefing format. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies also offers e-mail updates on a range of topics. The United States Army Medical Department Journal archives its issues online for free viewing. Other Army Medical publications are available online, some dating back to the 1980s. The National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine also provides a searchable online catalog of journals, audiovisuals and other resources.

If you know of a medical journal of interest to military medical professionals that features online content, please share a link in the comment section of this blog post on the military health system Facebook page.

About the Guest
Former Sergeant First Class
Austin S. Camacho, USA “was born in New York City but grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York. He majored in psychology at Union College in Schenectady, New York. There he read a number of good books, learned to tell good beer from bad, and became a brother in the Alpha Delpha Phi fraternity. Actually, the frat was largely responsible for the books and the beer. Dwindling finances and escalating costs brought his college days to an end after three years. Then came the factory work, the five years selling insurance, and finally, the Army. He enlisted as a weapons repairman but soon moved into a more appropriate field. The Army trained him to be a broadcast journalist. Disc jockey time alternated with news writing, video camera and editing work public affairs assignments and news anchor duties.

During his thirteen years as a soldier,
Austin S. Camacho lived in Missouri, California, Maryland, Georgia and Belgium. He also spent a couple of exciting weeks in Israel during Desert Storm, covering the action with the Patriot missile crews and capturing scud showers on video tape. While enlisted he finished his Bachelor's Degree at night and started his Master's, and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. And in his spare moments, he began writing adventure and mystery novels set in some of the exotic places he'd visited.

After leaving the
Army in 1996 Austin S. Camacho continued writing military news for the Defense Department as a civilian, frequently serving as on air anchor for the American Forces Information Service. Today he does public affairs work for the DoD agency charged with guarding the health of service members when they are deployed.” Austin S. Camacho is the author of Successfully Marketing Your Novel In The 21st Century, Russian Roulette, The Troubleshooter, World War II Radio Heroes: Letters of Compassion, Blood and Bone, Damaged Goods, The Orion Assignment, The Payback Assignment, Collateral Damage.

New Pentagon Channel Web Site Debuts Feb. 19

American Forces Press Service

Feb. 16, 2007 – The Pentagon Channel launches a redesign of its Web site Feb. 19, improving its line of products that distribute the channel's military news and information to men and women in uniform. "The Pentagon Channel's focus for 2007 is to leverage the interactivity of Web 2.0 to more efficiently and effectively provide the highest quality
military news and information to the men and women in uniform, wherever they are, whenever they want," said Brian Natwick, general manager of the Pentagon Channel.

In addition to its current features of video on demand, live video streaming and podcasting, the redesigned site,
www.pentagonchannel.mil, adds two new, highly interactive features. The first includes I-frame technology that allows users to save and send Pentagon Channel video clips so that they can be shared beyond the site. The second is the addition of an upload tool that enables users to upload videos and thus, be even more a part of the Pentagon Channel, Natwick said.

Pentagonchannel.mil also will work on both IBM-style personal computers and Apple's Mac computers, using Flash 7.0 technology to push out video content.

"Harnessing this new
technology augments our ability to communicate relevant, timely and credible military news and information to the men and women of the U.S. military," Natwick said.

The Pentagonchannel.mil Web site and the broadcast channel both officially launched May 14, 2004. Since the site's inception, upgrades have included streaming Pentagon Channel programming live around the clock and adding video-on-demand, and audio and video podcast capability.

The Pentagon Channel, the Department of Defense's cable television channel, broadcasts
military news and information for and about the 2.6 million members of the U.S. armed forces -- active duty, National Guard and reserve. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Pentagon Channel helps ensure that U.S. forces remain the best informed in the world, Natwick said.

Today, the Pentagon Channel is available on base to more than a million servicemembers who live and work on 333
military bases, camps and installations in the United States. The channel also is available to the 700,000 servicemembers and their families serving overseas in 177 countries via the American Forces Radio and Television Service.

In addition, the Pentagon Channel reaches more than 12 million households through commercial distribution on satellite and cable systems nationwide.
