1861 - Congress approves the construction of seven steam sloops.
1928 - A packtrain escorted by 35 Marines is ambushed by 600 Sandinastas near Bromaderos, Nicaragua. The Marines fight off the repeated attacks and are relieved the next day.1942 - During the Battle of the Java Sea, an allied naval force attacks a Japanese invasion convoy.
