Hagel, Dempsey React to Shinseki’s Resignation

WASHINGTON, May 30, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, issued statements on the resignation of retired Army Gen. Eric K. Shinseki as secretary of veterans affairs.

President Barack Obama announced Shinseki’s resignation today.

“I want to thank Secretary Shinseki for his long and distinguished service to our country, both in and out of uniform,” Hagel said. “His devotion to our troops, our veterans and their families remained steadfast throughout and evident always in his willingness to lead.

“Lilibet and I thank him and Patty for their kindness and friendship and wish them all the best for the future,” he continued. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with the VA leadership to do all we can to properly care for those who have served our nation.”

Dempsey said Shinseki “gave his all in the service of his nation.”

“He will be missed," the chairman added.

Hagel and Dempsey are in Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual Asia security conference.
