NRD Seattle Enlists 50 Sailors During Hockey Game

EVERETT (NNS) -- The Everett Silvertips WPL hockey team welcomed Navy Recruiting District Seattle Feb. 21 by hosting a Navy Night at Comcast Arena.

Cmdr. Christopher Sutherland, commanding officer of NRD Seattle, was on hand to drop the puck for the game between the Silvertips and the Seattle Thunderbirds.

"This team and their staff are excellent and we are very grateful that they welcomed us to be part of the game experience," said Sutherland.

Following the first period of the game, 50 young men and women from the surrounding area took the Oath of Enlistment from Sutherland on the ice in front of the cheering crowd.

"I can't think of a more awesome way to join the Navy than taking the oath with so many others like myself and my family and friends watching from the seats," said Delaney Stang, who currently is attending Skagit Valley College and is joining to go into the Aircrew program.

In addition to the on-ice events, area Navy recruiters manned tables talking to parents and teenagers about opportunities in the Navy and the NRD Seattle Petty Officer Association auctioned off signed commemorative jerseys, pucks and t-shirts to raise funds that will go towards community service efforts throughout the year.

NRD Seattle is the nation's largest recruiting district encompassing Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
