2/20/2015 - ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Members of the 116th Air Control Wing and Georgia Air National Guard recently honored a local community member for outstanding Air National Guard Recruiting and Retention support.

Capt. Daniel Speir, 116th Force Support Squadron deputy commander, and Master Sgt. Jose Padilla, noncommissioned officer in charge of recruiting for the 116th ACW, presented retired Lt. Col. Steve Atkins, Air Force JROTC instructor at Veteran's High School in Kathleen, the Community Influencer Award for recruiting team recognition under the State Awards and Recognition Program.

"Atkins has been a tremendous influence for many future leaders and military members," said Padilla. "He was nominated for the award because he set himself apart as a senior aerospace science JROTC instructor since the school's doors opened in 2010."

In addition to assisting the cadets with their military application essays, Atkins said he spends countless hours helping them prepare for their physical-fitness assessments.

The cadets provide color guards, ushers, and saber arches for many local and military functions such as retirements and awards ceremonies, including the 116th ACWs Annual Awards banquet and Family Day.
