NORFOLK (NNS) -- Diesel Engine Inspectors (DEIs) from
Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) Detachment (DET) Bahrain
completed inspections, repairs and testing on USS Comstock (LSD-45) in Manama,
Bahrain, Oct. 17.
The DEIs provided an immediate response to support the ship
by conducting a comprehensive post-casualty failure analysis to 2A main
propulsion diesel engine (MPDE) following a cracked cylinder liner to its NR. 6
cylinder.
"I would like to personally express my gratitude to
Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) Diesel Engine Inspectors
for their superb support during the inspection, repair and testing onboard USS
Comstock from Oct. 4 until Oct. 17," said USS Comstock (LSD-45) Commanding
Officer Cmdr. Scott Tasin in his Bravo Zulu message to FDRMC Det Bahrain.
"They worked nearly around the clock to professionally
assess the casualty and provide the ISEA with a detailed description of their
findings and required course of repair. FDRMC also drove the delivery of the
critical replacement piston and liner assembly from San Diego to allow for
Comstock to conduct the arduous change out of the NR. 6 power pack," said
Tasin.
"I would like to extend sincere thanks to ENC Morrow
and Mr. Paul Reulbach for their herculean effort during the concurrent underway
installation of the 1000 lb. cylinder liner, piston and connecting rod,"
said Tasin. "They worked around the clock in unforgiving conditions to ensure
Comstock was restored to full mission capable status in time for Commander,
U.S. Fifth Fleet tasking. Their professionalism, dedication to the repair of
Comstock and their resiliency cannot be overstated."
The mission of FDRMC DET Bahrain is to provide engineering
