WASHINGTON, May 26, 2014 – The chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff thanked service members and their families for their sacrifices during
the National Memorial Day Concert here last night.
Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey told a nationwide audience that
Americans trust their service members.
These young men and women “are willing to fight in every
clime and every place. Willing to risk and even give their lives for its
ideals,” the chairman said.
On Memorial Day, Americans remember the courage of their
sons and daughters in uniform, Dempsey said. “We renew our strength, the
strength of our nation for their deep devotion,” he said. “We rededicate
ourselves to secure our national purpose: to secure the blessings of liberty.”
On Memorial Day, the country “honors those who honored us --
men and women from every corner of our country and every branch of service --
who gave their lives so we can live free,” the chairman continued.
The nation must look back at the heroes who have brought it
this far, Dempsey told the audience.
“It is incumbent on us to look forward,” he said. “They are
out there today, America’s sons and daughters. They are in Afghanistan and
around the world, lacing up their boots for another day on the front lines of
our common defense. In the footsteps of generations before they will march
through the day with courage and commitment for each other and people they have
never even met.”
Dempsey asked all family members to stand and be recognized
for their service.
“Let us show that America will always stand firmly for those
that stand up for her,” he said.
