American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 13, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke today with Col. Gen. Sedki Sobhy, Egypt's new defense minister, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

In a statement summarizing the call, Kirby noted it was the first conversation between the two leaders.

“Secretary Hagel congratulated General Sobhy on his promotion and expressed his desire to maintain close contact as the general settles into his duties,” he said.

During the 20 minute call, Hagel and Sobhy discussed a range of regional security issues, the press secretary said, including the ongoing threat of terrorist networks, as well as the importance of free and fair elections for Egypt's political transition.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strong U.S.-Egyptian relations, Kirby said.
