WASHINGTON, Aug. 14, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel
received an update by phone yesterday from Israeli Defense Minister Moshe
Yaalon on the cease-fire underway between Israel and the militant group Hamas,
Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said.
“Secretary Hagel reiterated his support for Egypt's
mediation efforts and underscored the importance of achieving a sustainable
outcome that ensures Israel's security and addresses Gaza's humanitarian
crisis,” Kirby said in a statement summarizing the call.
Hagel and Yaalon agreed to continue working closely on the
broad range of security issues facing the United States and Israel and agreed
to speak again soon, he added.
