WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2014 – In a phone conversation last night, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin reaffirmed the strength of their nations’ alliance and agreed that close consultation and coordination are pivotal in promoting unity and readiness in all areas, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Adm. John Kirby said.

In a statement summarizing the call, Kirby said the two defense leaders discussed the security situation on the Korean Peninsula, the unwavering U.S. commitment to the alliance and the importance of regional cooperation to reinforce deterrence against North Korean threats.

“The secretary highlighted the steadfast U.S. commitment to the defense of South Korea, including extended deterrence capabilities, and expressed his gratitude for the shared investment the United States and Republic of Korea make toward the combined defense,” Kirby said.
