Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs
2/11/2015 - MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Of
all the military decorations our nation can bestow, the highest is the
Medal of Honor. It is awarded for conspicuous gallantry; for risking
one's life in action; for serving above and beyond the call of duty.
One such hero gave his life for his men and his country, but the true story of his legacy remained a secret for 42 years.
Chief Master Sgt. Richard Etchberger served as a ground radar
superintendent at a top-secret defensive position at Lima Site 85 in
Laos, a location that remained classified to the American public for
decades.
Etchberger was one of the most highly trained radar technicians in the
U.S. Air Force. A highly-effective and well-liked leader; he was the
crew chief of a radar team on LS 85 the night his team was attacked.
Despite having little combat training, Etchberger held off the enemy
while simultaneously directing air strikes into the area and calling for
air rescue. When a helicopter arrived in the morning, he repeatedly and
deliberately risked his own life. He left his safe position and braved
enemy fire to place three wounded technicians in helicopter slings.
With his remaining crew safely aboard, Etchberger finally climbed into
the rescue sling. Tragically, a burst of enemy ground fire fatally
wounded him as the helicopter turned away from the mountain.
For his heroism and sacrifice, Etchberger received the Air Force Cross
posthumously. The operation remained classified; however, and the
existence of the award was not publicly acknowledged until 1998.
After the declassification of LS 85 and a reevaluation of his actions, Etchberger was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2010.
To honor his legacy, Dorm 219 will be named after Etchberger on Minot
Air Force Base, North Dakota, Feb. 19, 2015. Chief Master Sgt. of the
Air Force, James Cody will preside over the ceremony with Etchberger's
son and family members, who will be present as well.
