12/17/2014 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill.  -- Lt. Gen. Thomas Travis, Air Force Surgeon General, visited Scott Air Force Base for the first time Dec. 8-10. Travis along with Chief Master Sgt. Jason Pace, Chief of the Medical Enlisted Force, met with members of the 375th Medical Group for an inside view of how they support the mission at Scott.

Travis serves as the functional manager of the U.S. Air Force Medical Service. He has authority to make decisions affecting the delivery of medical services and to develop plans, programs, and procedures to support worldwide medical service missions. He exercises direction, guidance, and technical management of a 44,000-person integrated health care delivery system serving 2.6 million beneficiaries at 75 military treatment facilities worldwide.

His visit began with Pace as they addressed members of the 375th MDG in an all-call at the library auditorium. They shared personal experiences, goals for the medical field, and the importance of medics. In addition, they highlighted the worldwide success of many medics and shared significant messages about leadership.

"We really need to elevate the best leaders; I don't care what core they have," said Travis. "You don't have to be a doctor to understand."

During the all-call Pace shared his "three C's:" commitment, courage, and compassion. He talked about the importance of instilling these virtues in today's Airmen.

Pace urged everyone to ask themselves in the morning how they are going to help their Airmen today. Then at night to ask themselves if they were successful, and did they make a difference.

Following the all-call, Travis and Pace received a tour of the Belleville Family Clinic and Scott's Medical Clinic. The lieutenant general also had a chance to visit the 375th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. Members of the 375th MDG briefed Travis and Pace about their role in supporting the wing's mission.

"You [medics] touch people's lives here every day," said Travis. "Every day you don't know whose story you're going to be a part of."

He said it's great for our Air Force to see what medics can provide during deployments and at our home stations. Many medics received personal recognition from the surgeon general and chief master sergeant for their accomplishments.

"I was very proud to be recognized by the surgeon general," said Staff Sgt. Lacy Erbe, 375th Medical Group Security Manager. "It was a great honor to meet him and be personally recognized by him and Chief Master Sgt. Pace for my hard work."

Travis ended his visit by saying thank you to the Airmen of the 375th MDG and emphasizing how proud he was of their accomplishments and daily duties.
