WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2013 – Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, this week attended a pair of high-profile events in support of military veterans’ education initiatives.

Earlier this week, Biden announced that she would be visiting campus programs that support veterans and military families as part of Joining Forces, the initiative she started with First Lady Michelle Obama to encourage all Americans to find ways to support and honor military families.
Columbia has distinguished itself as a military-friendly university, with more than 550 veterans currently enrolled in its undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. Some 300 of those are earning their Bachelor’s degrees following their military service at Columbia’s School of General Studies, which was founded after World War II largely to accommodate the unique needs of veterans and other students returning to college after varied lives and careers.
Columbia has continued to actively recruit and welcome Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans as essential members of its diverse university community.
And, during a Nov. 13 event at the Army-Navy Club here, Biden spoke about assisting military veterans in meeting their higher education needs. The event featured the announcement that the Veterans of Foreign Wars is a recipient of a $100,000 Google Global Impact Award grant to assist the VFW’s 1 Student Veteran program.
At the Army-Navy Club, Biden, a community college teacher, thanked Google for its support of military veterans. She also observed how veterans bring the same “determination and focus to their studies that they brought serving our country.”
