From U.S. 7th Fleet Public Affairs
BUSAN, Republic of Korea (NNS) -- Members from the Neutral
Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) met with 7th Fleet Commander Vice Adm.
Robert L. Thomas onboard the flagship USS Blue Ridge, August 20, 2014.
The NNSC was established 61 years ago through the Armistice
Agreement of July 27, 1953, which is still the only legal instrument for the
avoidance of hostilities on the Korean Peninsula.
Switzerland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Poland comprise the
NNSC. The term "neutral nations" is used to define the nations whose
combatant forces have not participated in the hostilities in Korea.
The main role of the NNSC today is to maintain and build relationships
with both sides and keep channels of communications open between them. Today
five Swiss representatives and five Swedish representatives are stationed in
Panmunjom, South Korea, on duty for the NNSC. Their main task is to show
presence at the inner Korean border and thus demonstrate that the ceasefire is
still is force.
During the visit NNSC toured Blue Ridge where they saw the
maritime operations center and discussed fleet and regional issues with senior
leadership.
NNSC discussed fleet operations with Vice Adm. Thomas to
gain a better understanding of the 7th Fleet's roles and areas of
responsibility. There are 80 ships and submarines, 140 aircraft, and
approximately 40,000 Sailors and Marines in 7th Fleet, and more than 48 million
square miles.
