WASHINGTON, Dec. 16, 2014 – Seventy years ago, beginning Dec. 16, 1944, the German army launched its last-ditch effort to thwart allied efforts in a conflict that would be dubbed the "Battle of the Bulge," and would be the Axis powers' final counteroffensive of World War II. The ensuing battle, fought over an 80-mile stretch, from Belgium to Luxembourg, would last close to 40 days and result in an Allied victory.
