June 19, 2007 – Texas National Guard land and air forces are on standby to assist flood-stricken citizens in northern Texas, a Texas Guard official said today.
The Texas towns of Gainesville and Sherman in the northern part of the state were particularly hard hit with torrential rains yesterday that caused water to rapidly overflow creek beds and carry away mobile homes and automobiles.
Six high-riding heavy trucks, three UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters and 38 Guard members are now on standby to render assistance, if requested, Air National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Gonda Moncada reported from the state's Joint Forces Office in Austin. The Texas Guard's soldiers, helicopters and trucks are now assembled in Fort Worth, Moncada confirmed, awaiting orders to move into flood-ravaged areas. At least five people were killed as a result of the flooding in northern Texas, according to news reports.
