WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel
met Oct. 11 with Honduran Defense Minister Samuel Reyes Rendon on the sidelines
of the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas in Arequipa, Peru,
Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said.
In a statement summarizing the meeting, Kirby said the
discussion covered a wide range of security issues of mutual concern, including
the threat to stability posed by narcotrafficking, natural disasters, and the
importance of a holistic approach to the security challenges facing Central
America.
“Secretary Hagel thanked the minister for his support of the
strong relationship between our two militaries and for Honduras' contributions
to regional security,” the admiral said. “The secretary reaffirmed the United
States' commitment to our security obligations in Latin America.”
Both leaders agreed on the need for continued dialogue and
cooperation across the region through exercises, exchanges and operations, he
added.
