Austin III spoke by phone today with Turkish Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar to discuss opportunities to increase and strengthen our longstanding defense ties and to share perspectives on regional issues, including the shared threat from terrorism. The Secretary reaffirmed the great value the United States places on its defense relationship with Turkey, as demonstrated most recently by the strong cooperation between both countries on Afghanistan.

DLA Troop Support Medical Director of Customer Operations, Daniel Keefe, and his team worked tirelessly through the Labor Day weekend until the final award was made on Sept. 17, 2021, to meet the Department of Health and Human Services' requirements and timeline.
The combination of test types was requested by HHS to support the White House initiative announced Sept. 9, 2021. Kits will be sent on a recurring basis to federally qualified health centers, nursing homes, colleges and universities and other vulnerable populations over the one-year period of the respective contracts.
"These test kits will be utilized across the nation in the battle against the spread of COVID-19," Keefe said. "A truly amazing effort that will be undertaken by the awardees as they partner with DLA, HHS and other federal agencies in delivering this most vital product."
Keefe credited his team — which included Medical Electronic Catalog Division Chief Eileen Motta in the lead role, as well as integrated support team chief Charles Reimer and acquisition specialists Christina Izzi and Denise Taubman — with the timely, and strenuous acquisition.
Other key players noted by Keefe included the Office of General Counsel representatives that helped navigate the acquisition, including: Michael Wilson, Zen Schaper and Katherine McCulloch.
"I'm very proud of the work our DLA Troop Support Medical Supply Chain professionals contributed in making these COVID-19 testing awards … supporting [Department of Defense] and whole-of-government partners," DLA Troop Support Commander Army Brig. Gen. Eric P. Shirley said.

Defense officials from Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and the United States conducted a call on October 1, 2021 to discuss regional security affairs.
Japanese Director General for Defense Policy Kazuo Masuda, ROK Deputy Minister for National Defense Policy Kim Man-gi, and U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Ely Ratner engaged in consultations on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) nuclear and missile threat, regional security, and substantive ways to strengthen trilateral security cooperation.
The representatives reaffirmed the importance of trilateral security cooperation and committed to explore high-level exchanges, including a Trilateral Defense Ministerial, on a date to be mutually determined in the future.

Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III met with India’s Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, during his first visit to the Pentagon, Sept. 30, 2021. The two leaders exchanged views on priorities for advancing the U.S.-India defense partnership, including through enhanced cooperation in new defense domains such as space, cyber, and emerging technologies.
Secretary Austin underscored the U.S. commitment to supporting the Indian Armed Forces’ transition toward greater institutional integration and operational jointness. They also discussed opportunities for expanding multilateral cooperation with regional partners.
This historic meeting highlights the enduring strength of the U.S.-India Major Defense Partnership as the two countries work in concert with like-minded partners to sustain a free and open Indo-Pacific.
